A Story Told in Ink:
Hawaii Tattoo Artist Adam Siehr Part One
By: Jason M.A. Walter for Hawaii’s 434 Tattoo

“Guns hurt people, tattoo machines create art.” ~ Adam Siehr

Homegrown and one of Milwaukee’s best, Hawaii Custom Tattoo Artist Adam Siehr has been in the game for over two decades. Adam has tattooed tens of thousands of people and owns 434 Custom Tattoo, the most successful custom tattoo shop in Honolulu, Hawaii. Celebrities such as actor Steven Graham and the auto-tune rapping sensation T-Pain are just a few of the celebrities who stopped by the tattoo shop on Ena Road in Honolulu.

“Part of my apprenticeship included mixing the drinks with crown for the bikers who owned the shop.” Siehr says as he paints with the tattoo machine, gliding gracefully over the freshly laid outline, my third tattoo from him. In November of 2010, I was referred to Adam by a friend and his work has helped me tell my own story, make sense of this crazy life. I had returned home to Hawaii after taking some time to take a spiritual journey, a vision quest, my metaphorical time in the desert, all of the above. Quite simply a time to find myself.

The custom design Adam put on me that day was meaningful to say the least. My first tattoo, I got back home in Hilo, was on my rib cage, a quote from Corinthians (no not that famous one), that made me remember to live from love and not fear. I told myself I would never get another tattoo on my rib cage. That night I dreamt there was a lion in place of the words. Adam gave me my first lion tattoo that day and today I have three tattoos on my rib cage, two lion tattoos designed by Adam. He elegantly place the piece around the text making it all flow into one design.

Siehr got his start in the tattoo industry at 17. I got my start in the “traditional, old-school tradition” apprenticing in Milwaukee. He has since worked as a guest tattoo artist in shops across the country, also worked around the world and settling in Honolulu as one of the founders of Tattoolicious. “I helped build the walls there.

Now 37 (but still looks 20), Adam is a veteran in the game for sure. I used to work in politics and in a way so did Adam. As a member of the Alliance of Professional Tattooists, Adam spent time testifying before the Department of Health, working behind the scenes with the laws relating to tattoos in Hawaii.
In his career in the tattoo industry, Adam has seen some pretty amazing things. “Dude, there’s so much.” So I ask about celebrities. That’s a pretty good question to jump. I’ve never interviewed anyone while getting a tattoo so my Gemini ability to jump from question to question is only half-there as I am focusing on the pain, breathing in the experience. I believe in the spiritual aspect of tattooing, every of my tattoos means something. But we get to that later…

I ask about celebrities because in addition to doing work on NFL Pro Tony Gonzales, members of the Chicago Blackhawks, there is one iconic figure who stands out. Adam has tattooed the world famous Pro Boxing Legend, “Iron” Mike Tyson. A picture of Adam and Tyson hangs near the entrance of the shop. Tyson was still in his physical prime and towers over Adam.

“He came in a few days before his fight with Holyfield to check it out. The shop I was at in Vegas had a bunch of, I call them carneys, working there. They all bum-rushed Tyson with their books.” Siehr stops his art for a second, I look at my arm, also inspired by a dream, the second piece on my arm, the first step to a sleeve, telling my own personal myth symbolizing a time of great transformation and rebirth in my life.

“I learned to be a carney myself and out of all the people there, Mike chose me. I got to do his first professional tattoo”. Tyson’s other “homemade” tattoos had been done before and during his prison stint. This being my third custom tattoo design from Adam, I already knew I was in good hands, but it was kind of cool to think that I was being worked on by the same hands that worked on someone who at one time, was arguably the most feared man on the planet.

“He was a good dude. I tattooed him for free. I only wanted a ticket to the fight and Mike stopped by a few more times to tell me his manager was working on it. Each time he’d roll in with celebrities or lots of people. But I never got the ticket.” Adam let’s out a wild, genuine laugh, the laugh of someone who in my opinion is free, a free spirit. I ask to take a break to stretch my arm, the position not normal for me. “It’s cool though. I got to say I tattooed Mike Tyson. I hope to one day get an autograph. I’d like that.”

Hawaii Tattoo Removal , 434 Tattoo

Are you thinking about covering your tattoo? If so check out 434 Tattoo .Maybe thinking about laser removal ? A few years back Tattoo Adam Siehr was offered a chance to experience a tattoo removal with laser by Doctor Greg Herbich .

The Removal was easy ,the healing was the hard part because of blistering , now today the tattoo is gone for good !

This Doctor is really good at what he does .

Tattoo Adam had a tattoo on his stomach around his piko (belly button ) , it was the only flash Adam had on his body and did not want it any more , after removal plans for a much larger design will go in place .

Another story about Tattoo removal is about a customer who had Tattoo Adam finish his sleeve , it was not Tattoo Adams Original design , so the customer wanted to remove his whole sleeve so Adam Could design a new tattoo to cover the whole arm tattoo removal done by Doctor Greg Herbich .

Tattoo Adam Has experience covering huge tattoos successfully and enjoys when the customer wants to remove a design so Tattoo Adam can work together with the Doctor and at the end the customer gets a really satisfying end result .

Adam Siehr , Customizing Artwork For Your Skin

Downtown Planet , November 14, 2005
By Sheri Char

Bring him an idea or a sketch , and he’ll make an original , quality custom tattoo design for you . This week , Tattoo Artist Adam Siehr is On Display .

Catering to the Local Clientele

Adam Siehr knows what he likes and dislikes after being in the tattoo business for 11 years . He’s worked at tattoo shops on the Mainland and in Hawaii , but now he runs his own private studio on Kalakaua avenue .
“I was not happy being in a tourist environment” says Siehr , who is better known as Tattoo Adam . “It was not the studios I was working in , but it was the kind of artwork I was doing .”
Siehr says that customers on vacation tend to prefer choosing a tattoo design off the wall , rather than creating an original design . But in his private studio , Tattoo Adam creates only original artwork .
“There’s no artwork to pick off the walls at my studio , ” he says, “and now I cater to local clientele .”
Besides customizing Tattoos , Siehr also specializes in covering up old tattoos.”Its everything from a name to a nice design they just do not want to have anymore .” he says .

Famous Clientele
When Siehr worked at Diversity , a tattoo shop in Las Vegas , he tattooed former world heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson .
“out of all five tattoo artists I was lucky enough that he picked me .”says Siehr , who created a tiger tattoo on Tyson’s arm.” “It was one month before he bit [Evander] Holyfield’s ear off , so it was still at the peak of his career .”
In 2001 he created a tattoo for Egan Enoue ,former SuperBrawl Champion , when Siehr was working at TattooLicious , a tattoo shop he helped to open in Hawaii .
“I tattooed Egan’s front upper legs” ,Siehrs says. “When I first met him, he had an outline of a koi. I did an original snake on his other leg , and then i finished his koi for him .”

Hawaii’ 434 Crew Tattoo’s another Celebrity .

Welcome to 434 Tattoo, the happiest place on earth! Ok, well so its not some crazy extravagant theme park, but the shop is defiantly in the business of producing beautiful memories that will last a lifetime.
The shop was founded in Dec of 2006 (by a previous owner) and was soon after handed over to the current owner Adam Siehr. Adam along with fellow artist Marko Livingston run the shop nowadays providing locals and tourists alike with quality tattoos and even better prices.
The shop is located at 434 Ena road in the heart of Waikiki, Honolulu and has been providing the public with a great atmosphere, exceptional customer service and quality tattoos. The shop gets everything from custom work ranging from Japanese to the unconventional, and even Polynesian to even tattooing an exact copy of a drawing or symbol. Within this shop they have had the pleasure of tattooing a wide variety of people from the traveling tourist, live-in local looking for that perfect shop to work with, and even the occasional celebrity. The most recent celeb to visit the shop was Florida’s own T-Pain, showing a rather creative self take on facebook with a tattoo that read “you dont have to like me” with the facebook “like” button incorporated within.
Many faces pass through the shop but the most important thing is that most face return to give a “whats up?” or in most cases get another tattoo. Ask almost anyone who visits 434 Tattoo and I’m sure most will agree… 434 Tattoo in Waikiki, is the place to be.

Hawaii Tattoo Newspaper Article

The Sugarbox tattoo studio is located on Kalakaua Avenue- tucked away from the normal bustle of Waikiki. New and old artwork and photographs fill the walls, and tattoo magazines are spread across the desk. The white tile floors, sparse furnishings and large windows make the small studio feel spacious. And, in the middle of the studio, Sugarbox owner Adam Siehr designs custom tattoos.

Sugarbox is one of the few studios that focus solely on custom work, treating tattooing more as an art than a trend. Siehr has been a tattoo artist for 15 years, and for him, it is a lifestyle. Siehr said, “Graffiti art was my gateway.” However, at 17, Siehr discovered tattoo art. “I fell off a freight train I was painting on and sort of fell into tattooing. I’ve been doing it ever since.”

Although he makes a good living creating custom tattoos, Siehr also has a second studio in Waikiki where he accepts walk-in customers. “Typically, in the winter, I get at least two walk-ins per day. In the summer, I get three or more. I work twelve ‘til twelve at the Waikiki studio and only come to Sugarbox for appointments.” On average, Siehr tattoos eight to ten customers per day, but it wasn’t always that busy. Tattoo artists, just as any other type of artist, must establish their reputation in order to ensure a steady clientele. “If you move somewhere new you have to start all over again,” Siehr said. “After nine years living in Hawaii I don’t want to move somewhere else and try to establish my reputation again.”

Tattoo art has always had a following, and Siehr’s clients are adamant believers. “I think it is definitely an art. It has so much history to it, and as a person or a culture you just see it as an art,” said Haunani Rimmel, who visited the Sugarbox with her boyfriend Guy Heresa. Mark Christen Math has a similar opinion. “I would say tattoo art has as much, if not more so, legitimacy than any other kind of art. Art can be destroyed, in a sense, but tattoos live with you until you’re gone. It’s an expression of art on your body.”

Though tattoo shops, like Siehr’s, may be a common part of American culture, artists are still struggling to legitimize their work as true art. “Some artists don’t believe tattoo artists are real artists,” Siehr added. “They don’t take them seriously. I’d also like the public to be more accepting (of tattoos).”

There are a wide variety of tattoo styles and shops, just as there are a wide variety of customers. Some prefer walk-in shops for spur of the moment tattoos or in order to get a quick souvenir of their trip. Waikiki and downtown Honolulu are full of such walk-in shops. Some tattoo customers, however, believe that tattoos should be well thought out and meaningful to the individual. “I have my son’s name on my back,” said Guy Heresa, singer for local band Irie Souls. “It means ‘beloved child that will be looked upon with love and respect.’” For some, tattoos are an expression of their individuality. According to Felix Gabhardt, “It represents my two sides. When my parents saw my tattoos it was like seeing how they looked at me my whole life. Like they were shocked. It shows that I am kind of a rebel.”

Tattoo art has evolved tremendously in the past few years, and Sugarbox is one of the custom studios where people can work with the artist to create something that is unique. According to many, tattooing will continue to flourish. “I think the blending of styles is awesome,” Siehr said. “Things are always changing. Things are being put onto skin now that 50 years ago couldn’t be done.” Math agreed, “It’s more widely accepted now than ever, and I think it’s just going to progress even more.”

However, Adam Siehr does believe that traditional cultural methods should not be forgotten. “All cultures have a different style. With cultural aspects, these things should be kept sacred and unchanged.”

Those with tattoos often develop a deep love for tattooing as an art. And Heresa described his tattoos as a memento of sorts. “It’s a rush. The noise of the gun, you know? It’s needles ripping into your skin, but what you get is art and it reminds you of something, a past time, a memory. I hope tattoo art lives on forever.”
